Classes for Kids

Pre-registration required for all classes

ART FOR PRESCHOOLERS...and their adults:

Story & Craft Preschool Me and Mom Time
Thursdays 1-2

Ages: 3 - 5
Fee: $12 per class or 6 classes $65

Bring your pre-schooler to the Space to explore different art materials and media.   We will have different art supplies and projects out for you to use with your young artist.  This is non-directed fun time to experience and play with art.

ART FOR SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS (5 and up):

Manga Drawing

Are you addicted to Manga? Do you wish you could draw those cute little animal side kick? Don't you just love all the different characters? Have you made your very own character yet? No- well come along and get drawing with me and we will learn how to do these things or find out how to make them look even better with some professional techniques. This is for anyone with a passion (or passion want to be) for all things Manga.

½ Day K

Fee: $20 per class/$195 for full session

Half-day students will get the opportunity to experience and experiment with different art forms as we focus on the art form of the month at Space to Create.  Projects will enable the students to delve into the art form – whether it is sewing, painting, printing, collage…- as they experiment with materials and techniques.  Students can join in any time for as long as they wish.

*We will pick up students from Salmon Bay at 11:00.  Students should come with lunch.

Sewing Machine 2 Day Workshops "Just Jeans"

Projects are designed for all level sewers. We will provide a supply list for needed materials. 

Exploring Impressionistic Art

In this class we will explore the colors of Claude Monet, create ballerina- or skate boarder - sculptures a la Degas, paint the city lights inspired by Pissarro, the gardens of Monet and more.  Through a variety of exercises and projects students will explore some of the different media and techniques used by Impressionist artists.  Kids should come ready to explore and have fun.


Paper Mache Creations with Barb Smith

Bring your kids to The Space to make the easiest pet you will ever own.  We will use wire, mesh, paper, paste, paint and assorted materials to bring to life fanciful (or realistic) creatures.  Kids should come prepared to get gooey.  All 3 classes will be required to complete project.

Fun with Drawing

In this class students will delve into some of the techniques that create realistic drawing including line drawing, shading and proportion. Techniques will be taught through fun exercises and projects.  The approach is very relaxed and fun. Come for one class or all 5

Gift Making

The holidays are fast approaching-- this is the perfect time for the kids to work on gift. Send the kids with a list of names so they can join in the gift making fun.

Come to The Space on Wednesdays after school.  Options will include sewing machine projects, painting, beading, various printing techniques and more. 

Silk Paintings for adults and teens

If you have never tried this technique, then you must! It is incredible rewarding and fun no matter what your abilities or artistic background. You will learn how to stretch silk, draw with a resist called gutta. Finally the best and most fun part of the whole process, paint and blend color using vibrant silk dyes. Your finished pieces will astound your family and friends and you will have been bitten by the bug and want to do more. In this 5 week session you accomplish a great level of self satisfaction as this technique is great for all levels. Come and relax and enjoy a new passion!

Portfolio Class for Teens

This class is specifically designed for you high school students who are looking to put together a portfolio of work.
Maybe you are wanting to apply to college, maybe for a job, maybe to get yourself on a course and you need to show your talents. Is your schedule at school so tight tat you have no time to get to art classes but you want some art work? This is the class for you. careful and constructive advice on your portfolio or guidance in putting together a body of art work in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment. Come along and find out what we can do to help you achieve your goal for your future.

Expressionism

Students will explore the many facets of expressionistic art.  Through a variety of projects, students will learn how to express emotions through art.  We will paint, print, collage, paper mache and splatter our way through the world of Van Gogh, Munch, Kirchner, Kandinsky and Pollock.

Abstract Art

What does it mean? What is that?  Students will explore abstract art through various projects: cutout collages inspired by Matisse; mobiles inspired by Calder;abstract faces inspired by Picasso and monoprints inspired by Gorky.

Surrealism

Fee: $100

Turning the real upside down and sometimes even inside out.  We will delve into the distorted, dream-like world of Dali; create mysterious scenes like Rene Magritte; create collographs of creatures like that of Miro; and collage inspired by Frida Kahlo.

Pop Art

Turning the ordinary into extraordinary.  We will explore how Pop Artist look to every day objects for inspiration.  We will make hand casts inspired by Segal; fabric sculpture inspired by Oldenburg; amazing maps inspired by Jasper Johns; collage inspired by Rauschenberg and portrait prints inspired by Warhol.


Potions and Lotion

Lip balm, sugar scrub, roller perfume and lotions

Come make some great gifts and spend time with your child. You will create lip balms, sugar scrub, roller ball perfume and  lotions. All products are made with the finest ingredients including mango butter, sweet almond oil, beeswax and more. Essential oils and flavoring can be added from an endless assortment. Wrap your creations in a 4x6 basket and you have the perfect Mother's Day gift.

Exploring Print Making

In this class students will learn different forms of printmaking: including linoleum blocks, monoprints, nature (leaves and feathers) printing and fabric printing.  Student will be able to experiment with this fun art through various projects.  Messy clothes are strongly recommended!


Children's Mural Class

Fee: $120

Create a painted mural using your own unique drawing.  Children will draw a picture that will be projected and traced onto a loose canvas ready for them to paint on.  Translucent glazes will be used, introducing color mixing and shadows by layering the paint.

Mosaic Mirrors

Join in the fun of designing, affixing and grouting a mosaic mirror.  You can go realistic or abstract, symmetrical or random-- you are the designer.  Dress for mess.

Room Decoration

Looking to spruce up your room?  Come make unique and personalized accessories to help you get organized in style.  You will make a bulletin board and a hand holder for all of your jewelry and hair accessories.  All supplies are provided, but feel free to bring your own accents.
